Why "Keswick" isn't said the way it's spelt
The name is usually explained as Old English for a "cheese farm", with -wick from wīc, a farm or settlement. As in Warwick, the W of the unstressed ending fell silent. Without the W, the S came to sit between two vowels, where it is voiced to a Z sound, as in "easy".
The standard pronunciation is /ˈkezɪk/, two short syllables with the stress on the first. Locals in Cumbria say it this way, as does everyone heading for the fells. "Kess-wick", sounding every letter, is the usual mistake from people who have only seen the name on a map.
How to say "Keswick" like a local, step by step
- Start with kez: the short "e" of "bed" and a buzzing Z, not S.
- Leave out the W completely.
- Finish with a short ick.
- Stress the first syllable: KEZ-ick.
Practise "Keswick" in a sentence
- Keswick is a great base for walking in the northern fells.
- We took a boat across Derwentwater from Keswick.
- The Theatre by the Lake in Keswick has a lovely summer season.
Saying it once correctly is easy. Saying it right in the middle of a fast sentence is the hard part, which is why the sentences above matter more than the single word.

How do you pronounce Keswick?
Keswick is pronounced /ˈkezɪk/, roughly "KEZ-ick". Keswick is KEZ-ick, with a silent W and a Z sound for the S.
Why is Keswick not pronounced how it is spelt?
Many British place names kept old spellings while everyday speech shortened them over centuries, so the written form no longer matches how locals say it.
