The British accents this test can detect
Seven broad accent groups, each defined by a few sounds you can hear in almost any sentence.
Received Pronunciation (RP)
The standard, "posh" British accent of newsreaders and dictionaries. Long "ah" in bath, no R in car, crisp T sounds. More on RP.
London and Estuary English
The everyday accent of London and the South East. Glottal stops ("wa'er"), "fing" for "thing" and a "day" that leans towards "dye".
Northern English
Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield and beyond. Short "a" in bath, the same vowel in "bus" and "push", and pure vowels in "day" and "go".
Midlands (Brummie)
Birmingham and the Black Country. Northern-style vowels with a hard G in "singer" and a distinctive flat, falling melody.
West Country
Bristol, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall. One of the few English accents that still pronounces the R in "car".
Scottish English
A tapped or rolled R, short pure vowels, "fil-um" for film and a throaty "ch" in loch.
Welsh English
A musical, sing-song rhythm, clear Ts and pure vowels, shaped by the Welsh language.
Accent quiz vs a real accent test
This quiz works from what you think you say. That's useful for finding out which accent your habits belong to, but people are famously bad at hearing their own pronunciation. Most learners believe they already sound more British than they do.
A real British accent test needs to listen. Accent Lab does exactly that: you read a sentence, it compares your pronunciation, rhythm and intonation with standard British English, and you get an accent score plus the specific words that gave you away. If your goal is to learn a British accent, that feedback is what makes practice work.
British accent test FAQ
How does the British accent test work?
Each question asks how you pronounce a sound that differs between British accents, such as the vowel in bath, the R in car or the T in butter. Each answer adds points to the accents that use that pronunciation, and your result is the accent you match most closely.
How accurate is this accent test?
It is a light-hearted guide, not a dialect diagnosis. It depends on how well you can judge your own speech, and most people find that hard. For a test based on your real voice, Accent Lab listens to you speak and scores your pronunciation against standard British English.
What is the most common British accent?
There is no single majority accent. Most British people speak a regional accent, and London and South East English (often called Estuary English) is the most widespread in southern England. Received Pronunciation, the standard posh accent, is spoken natively by only a small minority.
Can I test how British my accent sounds?
Yes. This quiz tells you which accent your habits match. To test how British your voice actually sounds, use Accent Lab on iPhone: read a sentence aloud and it gives you an accent score with word-by-word feedback.
Want a real British accent test?
