Why "Worcestershire" isn't said the way it's spelt
The county name is Worcester plus -shire, and both parts are reduced. Worcester shrinks to /ˈwʊstə/, and -shire loses its full "shy-er" sound, as it does in every English county name: Yorkshire, Hampshire, Wiltshire.
Most British speakers say /ˈwʊstəʃə/, ending in a plain schwa. You will also hear /ˈwʊstəʃɪə/, with "sheer" softened at the end, and both are correct. What British people never say is "shy-er", and the R is silent throughout, so the whole word has no R sound at all. The famous sauce, first made in the city of Worcester in the nineteenth century, carries the same pronunciation.
How to say "Worcestershire" like a local, step by step
- Start with wuss, the short vowel of "wood", exactly as in Worcester.
- Add a quick tuh with no R and no "ses" syllable.
- Finish with an unstressed shuh (or a light "sheer"). Never "shy-er".
- Keep all the weight at the start: WUSS-tuh-shuh.
Practise "Worcestershire" in a sentence
- Could you pass the Worcestershire sauce, please?
- Worcestershire is famous for its orchards and the Malvern Hills.
- They moved to a village in Worcestershire last spring.
Saying it once correctly is easy. Saying it right in the middle of a fast sentence is the hard part, which is why the sentences above matter more than the single word.
