How to pronounce Holborn

Holborn is a central London tube stop that trips up visitors daily. Say "HOH-bun", with the L silent as in "folk".

How it's said /ˈhəʊbən/ or /ˈhəʊlbən/ HOH-bun
Common mistake /ˈhɒlˌbɔːrn/ HOLL-born

Why "Holborn" isn't said the way it's spelt

The name is usually traced to a stream, the Holbourne, meaning a "hollow brook", which fed the River Fleet. The second part is the same bourne, a stream, seen in Marylebone. As an unstressed ending it was worn down to "bun", and the L before it fell silent, as it did in "folk" and "yolk".

The traditional London pronunciation is /ˈhəʊbən/, with the long "oh" of "go". Some speakers keep the L, /ˈhəʊlbən/, and that is also heard on the Underground. What sounds wrong to Londoners is "HOLL-born", with a short "o" and a full "born" at the end.

How to say "Holborn" like a local, step by step

  1. Start with hoh, the long vowel of "go" and "home".
  2. Leave out the L (or touch it lightly). Do not say "holl".
  3. Finish with a weak bun. No R and no "born".
  4. Stress the first syllable: HOH-bun.

Practise "Holborn" in a sentence

  • Change at Holborn for the Piccadilly line.
  • Her office is just off High Holborn.
  • The British Museum is a short walk from Holborn station.

Saying it once correctly is easy. Saying it right in the middle of a fast sentence is the hard part, which is why the sentences above matter more than the single word.
