How to pronounce bird in a British accent

In American English "bird" is essentially a B, an R and a D. In British English there is no R at all, just a long, smooth vowel that many learners find hard to hit.

British (RP) /bɜːd/ BURD (no R)
American /bɝːd/ BURD

Why "bird" sounds different in British English

RP uses /ɜː/, the vowel of "nurse", "word" and "her": a long, central, unrounded sound with the tongue relaxed in the middle of the mouth. General American uses /ɝː/, the same position plus R-colouring from a bunched or curled tongue.

To get the British version, take the American sound and remove the R. The tongue tip stays behind the lower teeth and the lips stay neutral, not rounded, otherwise it drifts towards "bud" or a French-sounding vowel. In casual British English "bird" is also slang for a girlfriend or young woman, a usage many find dated or sexist.

How to say "bird" like a Brit, step by step

  1. Start with a soft b.
  2. Make a long er, tongue relaxed in the middle of the mouth, tip resting behind the lower teeth.
  3. Keep your lips neutral. Don't round them and don't curl the tongue back.
  4. Finish with a light d: burd, one long syllable.

Practise "bird" in a sentence

  • There's a bird nesting in the hedge.
  • We get up early for the birdsong.
  • The early bird catches the worm.

Saying it once correctly is easy. Saying it right in the middle of a fast sentence is the hard part, which is why the sentences above matter more than the single word.

Frequently asked questions

How do you pronounce bird in a British accent?

In Received Pronunciation, bird is pronounced /bɜːd/, roughly "BURD (no R)". Say a long, R-less "er" vowel, as in "nurse": burd without the R.

Is the American pronunciation of bird wrong?

No. /bɝːd/ is standard in American English. Both are correct, they simply belong to different accents. If you are learning a British accent, aim for /bɜːd/.
